Sunday 22nd December 2013 – Start of our Christmas Holiday to the French Alps:)

Amazingly we got away about 12.20. The morning was a bit of a blur. Started loading the van and tried to decide which snow chains were the ones for our van, got them out tried them on the wheel and thought they were both broken then discovered that the right ones were in the van under the passenger seat and had been all year! We did the tyre pressure at the Orwell Crossing garage and had a good journey down to Dover. The weather forecast had been horrendous for the weekend and all next week but amazingly we seemed to hit a lull and the crossing wasn’t too bad. It was a huge and pretty new boat but Mag still felt rough afterwards. We arrived at Dunkirk at 7 french time and drove to our usual spot at Streppy Bracquegries and parked in the car park near the canal barge lift. Drove straight there this time after messing it up last time. We had tesco chicken and broccoli bake for tea. I wore my new onesie and wasn’t cold at all.

Monday 23rd December

Basically drove all day and it was a bloomin long way – over 500 miles today. Bought a mini decorated xmas tree on the way:) Anyway we made it to Morillon to park in the car park for the ski lift. Quick tinned steak and potato tea then bed.

Tuesday 24 December – Christmas Eve ***** Hike in the mountains at Sixt

Mag is feeling really ill! Bad migraine:( She doesn’t travel long distances very well, especially when there is a ferry crossing in the mix!! After a very small amount of porridge, coffee and painkillers galore! She started to feel a bit more human. A lot of the ski runs are closed because not enough snow and more (including the whole of Flaine apparently) are closed due to the high wind at the top. No sign of that down here it is a glorious sunny day:) As the lift passes are sooooo expensive and Mag feels so rough decided to leave that for another day. We drove to Sixt fer a Cheval and onto the Cirque du Fer a Cheval for a walk. By the time we got there she was feeling a lot better and we packed our lunch and set out on the most wonderful walk:) There was more snow up here and some of the track was pretty icy too! Managed to stay upright and walked past the cirque and to Le Bout du Monde which more or less followed a running boulder strewn river and criss crossed it with little bridges:) The amazing mountain peaks all around were fantastic and we even saw 3 Ibex which were pointed out by three French walkers – we would never have spotted them. Probably the most unusual thing was the amazing sound of avalanches booming around the cirque, there was a sign warning of avalanches and a half hearted attempt to block the footpath (which everyone ignored) but I don’t think they were very big avalanches, just some icy waterfalls breaking off but they were very loud! We were away from the van for about 5 hours – it was a fantastic way to spend Christmas Eve. Back to the van for coffee and extremely cheap and cheerful tesco mince pies bucked up by Hannah’s home made plum jam from the tree outside their old caravan:) Then we drove into Samoens for their Christmas Eve celebrations. We browsed around the shops and stalls and had a mulled wine. Mag bought a small fabric heart Christmas decoration for her little van tree which is now looking fab with natural bits and pieces she picked up on the walk, the few decorations it came with, the heart and some tick a tape that came out of a gun at the extravaganza which was ladies on stilts with lovely light up costumes on, doing a play about moon and stars which we didn’t understand at all! Then there were fireworks behind the church. We bought a rotisserie chicken for tonight and tomorrow – our xmas dinner:) Drove back to Sixt village (gorgeous xmas lights strung across the river) and parked up in the camper aire we spotted earlier which is quite near the village and on the river bank. One other camper in. We had some of the chicken with French bread and coleslaw and pickles:) Yum. So glad Mag is feeling better and that we have had such a great day – she never expected to be recovered enough to enjoy it!!
